SUNDAY BRUNCH
with Alexis P. Suter & The Ministers of Sound, Vicki Bell, Ray Grappone
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Hipbone Records recording artist Alexis P Suter with Ray Grappone, drummer/percussionist and producer/vocalist Vicki Bell, deliver their mix of Gospel, Blues, Traditional, poignant, and time-honored American music, up-close and personal.

Blues Music Award nominee Alexis P. Suter is a powerhouse bass/baritone vocalist with the ability to go to "that other place" where singers go when they are lost in the music. It is no wonder the late B.B. King and the late Levon Helm were big fans. Suter and her band have played nearly 100 of Helm’s shows in Woodstock NY and opened for “The King” when he visited her hometown of NYC.

The Ministers of Sound feature Ray Grappone (APSB, Buster Poindexter, Levon Helm) on drums and percussion, Vicki Bell (APSB, Open Door, Corey Daye) on vocals and percussion, and extraordinary Special Guest Musicians.

The FALCON

Marlboro, NY   See Map
"Guyger combines his tool, and soul, to make the harp sing, growl and roar like a freight train." - Boston Blues Society

"[Radio Blues, Severn Records] is some damn fine dirty white blues, 100% in the tradition and made by a quintet nodding very heavily back to black origins." - acousticmusic.com

Philadelphia is home to one of the finest blues harp players in the world, for nearly 40 years. 2009 Handy Award nominee Steve Guyger has been dishing out the finest blues. whether in a duo, trio, or with his band, The Excellos, Steve rocks the house with every gig.

Steve has toured with the late Jimmy Rogers, among others, and has played with many of the great Chicago bluesmen and contemporary players, yet remains one of the best kept secrets in blues. The late William Clarke called Steve “the best harp player I’ve ever seen.” Mark Hummel called him “a monster player.” If you’ve never heard him, you’re missing a major page in your blues portfolio.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Swing/Jump, Big Band, Blues
Paramount Hudson Valley
1008 Brown Street
Peekskill, NY   See Map
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a contemporary swing revival band from southern California. Their notable singles include "Go Daddy-O", "You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby)", and "Mr. Pinstripe Suit". The band played the Super Bowl XXXIII half-time show in 1999. The band was originally formed in Ventura, California, in 1989 by leader Scotty Morris. The band was named Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after Scotty Morris met blues guitar legend Albert Collins at one of the latter's concerts. "He signed my poster 'To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy'," Morris explains. "I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didn't really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me." He and Kurt Sodergren are the two "original" members, with the rest of the band joining later. The band has concentrated on the swing of the 1940s and '50s, playing clubs and lounges in their early years.

Some artists document their lives through music. Others chronicle their times. It’s a rare artist who can do both, telling their own story through songs that also encapsulate the essence of people and places who have helped define their era. Woody Guthrie comes to mind, so does Bob Dylan. Yet few others, for whatever genius they may possess, can relate their own history to the history experienced by those who find that common bond, be it a coming of age, living through the same realities or sharing similar experiences. Ellis Paul is one of those gifted singer/songwriters. Though some refer to him as a folksinger, he is more a singular storyteller, a musician whose words reach out from inside and yet also express feelings, thoughts and sensibilities that most can relate to some, regardless of age or upbringing. The exhilaration of the open road. A celebration of heroes. Hope for redemption. Descriptions of those both near and dear. Sharing of love; intimate, passionate and enduring.

1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Paul Green, founder of School of Rock, has been teaching kids to play rock music, including the music of iconic composer, Frank Zappa, since 1998. Green has been the subject of the documentaries "Rock School" and "Woodstock:Then and Now", and the inspiration for Jack Black's character in the film "School of Rock".

His students have played at Lollapalooza, Carnegie Hall, CBGBs, and Austin City Limits, among other notable venues and festivals. They have shared the stage with Perry Farrell, Jon Anderson, Gene Ween, and Alice Cooper, to name a few.

No musician had a longer tenure with Frank Zappa, or appeared on more albums, than Ed Mann. Being Frank Zappa's percussionist meant playing the hardest lines and rhythms while supplying a batterie of acoustic and electronic sounds. Ed did so with great skill and aplomb, and served as"clonemeister" running band rehearsals in Zappa's absence.

Ed's post-Zappa career has been rich and varied.

Frank released his first record "Reform" in 1981 featuring world famous bassist Michael Moore. In the SF Bay area he became a member of Don McCaslin Sr’s band Warmth. He now lives in Seattle, and in 2008 released his CD "Coast To Coast" featuring Pianist and brother Tom Kohl. The Norris Brothers band started off as a group of musicians getting together to share the joy of music. On a weekly basis Tim Norris (keys), Matt Norris (drums), Hank DeCora (guitar) and John Hahn (trombone) would get together to shed the musical stylings of Steely Dan. Over the course of time, their repertoire has expanded to include many jazz, soul and rock classics.

All four players are world-class musicians and impromptu musical attempts are a frequent occurrence. It's more than jamming. It's a focus on creating musical statements that move musicians and listeners alike.

There is no shortage of Steely Dan in the set list, but you might hear hints of Miles Davis classics, Hall and Oates hits as well as some James Brown.

Come groove to the Steely Dan album Aja and other fine songs.

IMPROV CUBED: FROM BACH TO THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
with André Mehmari, Tanya Gabrielian, Chris Pattishall
Jazz
Fisher Center, LUMA Theater
60 Manor Avenue
Annandale-on-Hudson, NY   See Map
Experience the secret past of improvisation from Bach to the Great American Songbook as classical pianist Tanya Gabrielian and jazz pianist Chris Pattishall join virtuoso André Mehmari on double piano in a musical journey spanning 300 years and layered with masterful improvisations.

History's best composers were expected to churn out improvisational masterpieces with regularity, so why are our associations with improvisation so deeply tied to jazz, yet so little to the classic musical past? In this special concert, three pianists recreate the rich and hidden history of improvisation with variations on works by Bach, Scarlatti, Schubert, and music from ragtime, Brazilian choro, and the Great American Songbook.
