The root of the Alexis P. Suter Band's sound is Suter's deep, powerful, commanding, and soulful voice, artfully blending the lines between gospel and blues. Suter is the daughter of a singer, Carrie Suter, backing vocalist with Harry Belafonte and Mahalia Jackson and cites the late classic R&B singer, Ruth Brown, as a primary influence.

In 2005, Suter and her band attracted the attention of the legendary drummer for the Band, Levon Helm. Helm offered the group numerous showcases at his Midnight Ramble in Woodstock, NY. Helen Avakian is the newly crowned International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion. Since 1979, only 2 women have won this prestigious contest held in Winfield, KS. The other is the great Muriel Anderson. Both ladies joined for a show here in Hyde Park only 6 months ago, and each received a well deserved standing ovation from a standing room only sell-out crowd. Helen and Muriel reunite Dec 13 in Kent, OH for the Woodchoppers Ball, an annual benefit for the homeless billed as "9 of the greatest guitarists in the world".

After the Ball, Helen travels briefly to the Hudson Valley for the release of her new CD, "Notes from Helen". This is her first all guitar instrumental CD, featuring the types of songs that just won her a world championship. Fans of Helen's wonderful vocals and songwriting will not be disappointed, however. "Zwas the Night before Zmas"
with Ed Palermo Big Band
The FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Ed Palermo is not a “business as usual” musician. His Big Band may deliver Zappa, Hendrix, Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield, Todd Rundgren or one of Ed’s own compositions, with lush turns and twists.

The legendary Gil Evans states: “I first heard Ed Palermo’s music in a small club in the SoHo section of Manhattan. He was using the instrumentation of a traditional big band yet his arrangements and songs were anything but that. When I thought the music was going a certain direction, it would suddenly turn a corner. Ed has the ability to keep that important balance between cohesiveness and unpredictability. Ed Palermo’s music is alive and represents now.”

The latest release, 'Oh No! Not Jazz!!' consists of two albums - the first explores Ed's distinctive interpretations of Frank Zappa's work and works from original Mothers Of Invention. The second album features Ed's own riotous, colorful compositions.

Ever since I have been little I have wanted to help people and bring more kindness into the world. I am now a junior at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and I still want the same thing. When I was a little girl I almost lost my best friend to childhood leukemia. I would have to say that, that is something that has truly shaped and defined my life, and NOT in a negative way. It has made me realize how precious life is and how grateful we must be for every minute. It also pushed me to think of how I could help other children who are fighting cancer. Last summer I started Jess's Hope which is a small operation in which I make crafts and cards and other presents for the home. The profit goes to helping children with cancer. However, I wanted to do something bigger, so I will be fulfilling that dream by hosting a Holiday Benefit Concert with all proceeds going to help do something nice at this time of year for children with cancer. There will be a silent auction & baked goods!

Now, teaming up with arranger James Kessler (National, London, Chicago Symphonies; Boston Pops; Lionel Ritchie to Renee Fleming), Debi has written/recorded holiday songs that feel as warm and familiar as classic holiday fare. Debi, whose songs have been nominated for a Grammy®, has performed worldwide at concert halls and on shows such as A Prairie Home Companion, Good Morning America, Ken Burns' The National Parks and The Roosevelts, and NPR's All Things Considered. Of her new CD "If I Were an Angel," Rob Weir of The Valley Advocate says, " If you’ve any doubt about how good Debi really is, listen to her out-muscle a string orchestra on ‘O Holy Night.’ We’re talking Diva Territory."

This is always a fun night at the Rosendale Cafe. There are 6 performers from 8pm to 10pm. Given the time of year, most of my set will be Christmas Instrumental guitar music. You can hear a couple samples if you click my name above, or the "I Bring You Joy" links. (i.e. these are actually links to mp3s I have recorded). I may include one Christmas parody song I wrote as well.

Host John Huges is still working on the order, but the scheduled performers are: Eliza and Sophie, Phil Rose, Lannie Bolde, Patrick Daley (me), The Saxy Santas, and Wirtzian Revivalists.

The Cafe has a fantastic and reasonably priced vegetarian menu.

I hope to see you. Come on out!
