Joe Louis WalkerThe FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Joe Louis Walker is a walking encyclopedia of blues history, and blues vocal and guitar styles.

In many ways, Walker’s story is unusual. Born in San Francisco on Christmas Day 1949, he's now based in Westchester, New York. He was part of the Bay area blues scene in his early teens, and by the time he was 16 he had soaked up the sounds of the likes of T-Bone Walker, Amos Milburn, and boogie woogie pioneers Meade Lux Lewis and Pete Johnson. As he grew up, he found himself on stage with such disparate tutors as John Lee Hooker, Thelonius Monk, the Soul Stirrers, Steve Miller and Jimi Hendrix.

Walker's career stretches decades as well as a variety of musical styles, including gospel, blues, rock and jazz. Along the way he played President George Bush’s inauguration, helped President Bill Clinton induct B.B. King into the Kennedy Centre Awards, and performed on several of America’s most-watched late-night television shows.

After his recent smash success with the Boston Pops, he was hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz.” Before a recent show in the northwest, the local paper quipped “John Pizzarelli is so impossibly cool, he shouldn’t be legally allowed to enter Oregon!” — a genuine quality you may have noticed in the popular casino TV ads that featured him. This will be John's first appearance at the TCC since his father, jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli headlined here.

KJ remembers, “I picked up a guitar when I was ten and immediately I started writing music..."

Guitarist and songwriter, KJ Denhert, calls her music Urban Folk and Jazz. Her voice is powerful, her lyrics full of intelligent insight, and her musicianship is impeccable. Her eclectic yet unified performances reach out to audiences without compromising her music and beliefs. She performs the unusual feat of being both highly individual and quite accessible.

KJ co-produced her CD, Number 9, supported by a strong cadre of players, including longtime New York Unit band members Mamadou Ba , (Harry Belafonte, Regina Carter) on bass and drummer Ray Levier. Saxophonist, Aaron Heick (Richard Bona, Chaka Khan, and Sting) has remained a regular since his debut on KJ’s 2007 recording Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz, while balancing a busy schedule that paired him with Sting on the latest recording of “Englishman in New York.”

Combine Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass and James Brown, and you get LA's signature style - "old school romance" and fiery funk! His unique registry, being a bass/baritone singer, brings passion and fire to the romantic songs that are an important part of his musical experience.

The fervor and spiritual connections felt by his audiences is matched only by his ability to become "one" with his soulful, heart pounding funk. A celebratory aura is seen in his outlook on life and is evident in his performances.

LA has performed with the legendary Intruders as well as on many "Motown Review" assignments. He is currently the bass/ baritone singer and co-founder of "Tradition", a wonderful "classic soul" cover singing group.

LA has been a radio personality on his own "Quite Storm" show on 91.1 WOSS in New York and has been seen in commercials, and on documentaries for public and commercial television.

Hootenanny Cafe Mini Concerts
Online: www.wtbq.com or 93.5FM, NY   See Map
The first lyrics you hear on the song “Late Bloomer” could be considered singer/songwriter Karen Hudson’s declaration of intent: “Kicking out some rock, making room for roots.” Hudson digs “deep down” to exorcise some demons and give herself permission to blossom and thrive. On Sonic Bloom, Hudson reckons with the important men in her life, and stakes out her own claim as a grown woman. Hudson explores some gothic territory, but refuses to be held hostage by her sense of loss, so even her darkest songs are tempered with wry humor. Producer Eric “Roscoe” helps reveal the hurt and heart of every number. A fiscal sponsorship from NYFA allowed Hudson to fund the recording of the CD with foundation grants. Growing up, Karen drew on her years glued to a transistor radio, and Linda Ronstadt songs she sang for school theater auditions to pen her own songs. After college she moved to NYC, released two CDs, and has opened for Walter Salas Humara (The Silos) Madeline Peyroux and Pete Seeger.

Jack Grace BandThe FALCON
1348 Route 9W
Marlboro, NY   See Map
Jack Grace is a singer, songwriter and guitarist hailing from Brooklyn, NY. Simple enough, unless you happen to work in the music business. The entertainment world loves a label: character actor, avant garde painter, fill-in-the-blank musician. Jack writes for himself and plays for others. Simple enough, right?

Previous releases and tracks featured in the films “Super Troopers” and “Beer Fest” have garnered both a growing following and a steady hum of praise. His debut, Introducing the Songs of Jack Grace, was an acoustic affair, which many mistook as country. “Fine, call it country if you want,” he said at the time. “What you label it doesn’t mean all that much to me.” What mattered? There were new rules to be broken. His most recent release, Drinking Songs for Lovers, had some fine country numbers, but he added mariachi horns to give them a Latin flavor.

A consummate live performer, lyricist, singer and guitarist, Jack is at the helm of a powerhouse band.

We have over 150 songs on our list, including '70s, '80s, '90s and contemporary pop/rock/soul. The list will be posted on the 12 Grapes Facebook page each month, so check it out.
